Ecosurf Forum

The Sunshine Coast will be home to Queensland’s first Ecosurf forum on Saturday, May 15.

Ecosurf is a Surf Life Saving Australia initiative that is committed to the ecologically sustainable use of the coastal environment. The forum aims to promote environmentally friendly practices, education and awareness of environmental issues to clubs in order to ensure the ecologically sustainable use of coastal resources.

The event is mainly targeted to clubs in the Sunshine Coast branch, however other branches might like to find out more information to run a similar initiative in their regions.

The forum includes three knowledgeable guest speakers who will provide practical experience and case studies on the environment including:

Richard Olesinski, Environmental Consultant & South Australian ‘clubbie’
Jo Cooper – Ecosurf champion’ from Sydney
Alison Ewings - Westpac

The event is sponsored by Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Australian Food and Grocery Council and Westpac.

Youth Involvement Program (YIPs)

Yips LogoNEW RESOURCES OUT NOW!

SLSQ and the State Membership Services Committee are excited to release supporting resources to assist clubs with running the Youth Involvement Program.

An innovative program developed by Anglesea SLSC in Victoria to provide motivation for the clubs’ junior members. YIPs is a reward program for members aged 13 to 25 and operates on a points-based system, where participants collect points for being involved in a range of lifesaving activities.

The more activities youth engage in and the more hours they volunteer, the greater the points collected. Points count for EVERYTHING that you can do in lifesaving under the following categories:

YIPs image

1. Lifesaving
2. Development
3. Competition
4. Administration
5. Junior Activities
6. Youth Activities
7. Club Activities
8. Community Project (@ Gold Level)

As points and patrol hours accumulate youth get rewarded for their contribution in three stages along the way:

BRONZE
SILVER
GOLD

Surf Lifesaving is highly respected by the public and continual involvement in a volunteer organisation, as documented by the YIPs program, will do great things to help develop members’ education, broaden employment opportunities, and boost life skills in general.

What are you waiting for? Get involved today! See your club or Branch Lifesaving Development Officer for more information.

Patrol Equipment - Creata/ Surftrade Relationship

As of October 1st, Creata / Surftrade is no longer the supplier of patrol gear, manuals and equipment to surf lifesaving clubs. Their involvement in Surf Life Saving over the last 5 years has been very useful and much appreciated by all – however a brand new and improved Online Shop will open for business by mid October.

This exciting new program, operated by Surf Life Saving Australia, has been set up with 3 main goals:

1/ to reduce the cost to clubs of key products;

2/ over time to expand the range of relevant gear available to clubs, including a range of fundraising merchandise for clubs and;

3/ to improve the security of the system to protect clubs from risk of false orders on their accounts.

The transition away from Creata to the new Online Store is happening right now. In the interim certain items are available directly from SLSA. Your patience in this transition phase is very much appreciated.

An official announcement to clubs giving details of the new Online Store will be made by October 7th. If you have any queries in the meantime you can email info@slsa.asn.au.

SLSQ Awards of Excellence

Fifty-one lifesavers, clubs and community members across the state have been honoured for excellence in lifesaving at Surf Life Saving Queensland's (SLSQ) annual Awards Presentation.

The awards, presented by Premier Anna Bligh at the Parliamentary Annexe in Brisbane, recognise exceptional commitment to lifesaving, surf sports and youth development, as well as members of the community who have worked with Surf Life Saving to improve beach safety and awareness.

SLSQ chief executive officer Tony Scanlan said the Awards Presentation gave the organisation the opportunity to thank its members for their outstanding dedication.

Mr Scanlan said it was fitting to hold the event at the Parliamentary Annexe in 2009, with SLSQ celebrating 100 years since its first recorded rescue in the same year Queensland celebrated turning 150.
"All our volunteer members do great work, but sometimes people perform deeds or show commitment that goes beyond the call of duty," he said.

"The Awards Presentation is our chance to say a particular thank you to the people whose vigilance and service makes their achievements worthy of special recognition.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate all our award winners once again. They are among the thousands of members who perform acts of volunteerism and bravery every day, and who help to make Surf Life Saving Queensland such a respected organisation."
